What Is Claude Duet? Anthropic's Proactive Agent

Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive agent. See its background work, approvals, US waitlist, usage limits, and research-preview restrictions.

Claude Duet is Anthropic’s proactive AI agent: it checks connected work accounts, prepares work while you’re away, and asks before taking consequential actions. Announced on October 21, 2026, the research preview runs on Claude Opus 5.5; as of October 2026, access starts with a waitlist for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers, not a general rollout.

Key Takeaways:

  • Duet comes to you with a morning brief rather than waiting for a new chat.
  • Its account checks happen every few hours, not in real time; background activity uses your Claude plan limits.
  • It prepares work independently but pauses for approval before sending, paying, signing, or deleting.
  • The US-only preview requires a Pro or Max plan and a waitlist invitation.

What is Claude Duet?

Duet is a separate agent experience, available through its own iOS or Android app and on claude.ai. Anthropic built it around Opus 5.5 to identify what needs attention, undertake assigned tasks, and return results or an approval request. The announcement frames it for professionals and small business owners. That matters: Duet can draft a follow-up or assemble a dashboard, but it doesn't become a second human employee or promise to catch every deadline.

How does Claude Duet work?

Each morning, Duet prepares a short brief using your connected email and calendar. It checks accounts again every few hours and may message when a task finishes or needs a decision. That interval is deliberate: Anthropic says constant checks would use plan limits faster. A time-sensitive email can therefore arrive between checks and escape the next brief until Duet looks again.

Behind the app is a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop can be closed while assigned work continues. The Claude Help Center says finished briefs, models, decks, and dashboards can appear as editable files in the Make tab, while the Tasks tab tracks work and outstanding input. You decide whether a task is complete; a suggested completion isn't the same as your sign-off.

What can it do, and what won't it do?

Anthropic lists dashboards, financial or sales forecasts, prototype websites, scheduling, and draft replies among possible jobs. As of October 2026 its product page says Duet works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. That is a marketplace count, not a guarantee that every connector works in Duet or has the same permissions. The help article specifically notes that some connectors, including Slack, have limits.

Before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting something, Duet shows the proposed action and waits for approval. Trading securities and moving money between accounts remain off-limits even if you approve. If your goal is to clear a crowded inbox, read the proposed recipients and draft text; a summary of what Duet found is no substitute for reviewing what it would send.

Who can use Claude Duet and what does it cost?

As of October 2026, eligibility is limited to people with US Claude accounts on Pro or Max, plus a waitlist invitation. Anthropic says invitations arrive in waves; joining doesn't promise a date. Team and Enterprise aren't included yet. The standalone mobile apps and claude.ai experience become relevant once you gain access, not merely when you join the list.

Duet adds no separate charge during the preview, but it shares your existing plan's session and weekly usage limits. Morning briefs and background check-ins consume usage, and a substantial financial model may take more turns than a chat reply. The help center says admitted users get one full reset of both limit types, available through November 30, 2026. That is a limited reset offer, not unlimited free Duet work.

How is Duet different from the Claude app?

Ordinary Claude chat waits for you to open it and ask. Duet may contact you first, continue work on its cloud computer, and return a file or a decision request. The account relationship is less novel: existing Claude memory, skills, and connected apps carry into Duet. According to Anthropic, Duet can search prior eligible Claude chats if the corresponding setting is enabled. You can disconnect an app, but its help center says memory of information from earlier conversations remains.

How does it compare with Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots?

Duet enters an agent category that already includes Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots. All three promise work between conversations. Meta describes Muse as a personal agent in a dedicated cloud computer; OpenAI says Dots offer a computer view. Anthropic says Duet users cannot yet watch or take over its browser.

CNBC's launch coverage places Duet against both. Don't read that as a tested ranking of reliability. Anthropic itself says personal errands, including booking tickets, are weaker than Duet's work-focused tasks. If the immediate problem is life admin such as a missed refund or a form buried in your inbox, Mateo, built by the Zentor team, is the more relevant sister product to assess; its early access is free and available worldwide. That isn't a claim that Mateo and Duet use the same underlying agent or integrate with each other.

Safety and the approval model

Duet encounters email and pages that other people wrote, so malicious instructions in that material are a prompt-injection risk. Anthropic describes browser-use defenses, an auto mode classifier for actions, a separate check for sensitive information, and credential handling designed to keep passwords and sign-in tokens out of the model's direct view. Those are the company's stated safeguards, not proof that an attacker cannot fool the system. Its help guidance explicitly cautions that no defense is perfect.

Zentor does not integrate with Claude Duet. Its different bet is user-owned workspace memory that can move across AI tools through Zentor MCP, rather than context bound to a single agent surface. Zentor's self-learning skills and adaptive workspace matter when a repeat task should retain your working preferences; its model routing and always-on workspace address execution, but they do not certify a Duet result. If portability and an artifact you can inspect are what you want from an agent, consider that distinction before choosing a vendor.

FAQ

Is Claude Duet free?

There is no separate preview fee for eligible Pro or Max subscribers, but Duet uses their existing Claude plan limits. It is not a free-tier offering.

Can I choose the model?

No. Anthropic says the preview runs on Opus 5.5 and selects how much effort a task needs.

Can I watch it use the browser?

Not yet. You can track tasks and review results, but you can't watch or take over its browser session.

Does Claude Duet support Microsoft 365?

Not as of the October 2026 help-center guidance; Anthropic lists Microsoft 365 as unavailable in this preview. Check its help page again before making a purchase or migration decision.
